Sutton Swimmers excel again at the Nottinghamshire County Championships 2018

The Championships were capped off in fantastic fashion with Sutton duo Chloe Quinn and Matthew Woodhall again being crowned overall County Champions.

Chloe Quinn was crowned the overall County Champion in her 15yrs age group at the County Championships having completed her swimming events by taking yet another Gold medal in the final individual girls event the 800m Freestyle. In winning Gold Chloe set a new huge Personal Best time of 9 minutes 32.34 seconds.

To be crowned overall County Champion in her age group Chloe amassed 2924 points across 5 scoring categories with points being allocated on a sliding scale from the world record in each event which earns 1000 points. In her best 50m sprint event she earned 564 points, in her best 100m event she secured 609 points, in her best 200m Form event (Backstroke,Breaststroke or Butterfly) she earned 575 points, in her best distance Freestyle event of 200m or further she earned 626 points and in her best individual medley event she earned 550 points. This was the second time that Chloe had secured an overall age group title having previously won it as a 9yr old in 2013.

Chloe was delighted with her 2018 Counties campaign and said, "I am so glad to have put together a high number of personal best times during these Counties and will continue training hard to carry this form into the National qualifying window which commences in March."

Incredibly Sutton swimmers secured 1st and 2nd place in the girls 15yrs overall category with Hollie-Mae Dove finishing runner up to Chloe by scoring 2785 points.

Hollie-Mae ending her campaign with a new Personal Best time in the 800m Freestyle finishing 4th in her age group in a time of 10.14.21. This runners up finish was the highest position that Hollie-Mae Dove had ever secured in the overall age group competitions.

Matthew Woodhall was again crowned the overall County Champion this time in the boys 14yrs age group. Matthew has secured this overall title at every County Championship he has competed in since starting in these competitions in 2014. Some of Matthews previous titles have been really closely contested with a matter of a handful of points separating 1st and 2nd places. This year was a little more comfortable for Matthew who amassed a total of 2482 points to win by a margin of 105 points.

In Matthews's final event of the 2018 campaign the 1500m Freestyle he again took Gold for his age group and was crowned the overall Junior County Champion by finishing in a new Personal best time of 17 minutes 32.39 seconds.

Matthews hard earned points were accumulated by his best swims in 50m sprint 446 points, best 100m 481 points, best 200m Form 479 points, best distance 566 points and best individual medley 510 points.

Other Sutton swimmers competing in the final 800m/1500m distance Freestyle events of 2018 were as follows:

Thomas Polley 12yrs age group 1500m won a Silver medal for finishing runner up in a time of 20.29.73

Adam Read 13yrs age group 1500m won a Bronze medal for finishing 3rd in a time of 19.40.25.

Bailey Ward 16yrs age group 1500m won a Bronze medal for finishing 3rd in a time of 17.26.14.

Michael Senior 13yrs age group 1500m narrowly missed a medal finishing narrowly behind Adam Read in 4th place in a time of 19.43.59.

Molly Etherington 12yrs age group 800m finished 5th in a time of 11.04.27

Ellie Bunker 15yrs age group 800m finished 5th in a time of 10.24.61

Talitha Oud 13yrs age group 800m finished 8th in a time of 10.23.71

In addition to Chloe Quinn 1st, Matthew Woodhall 1st and Hollie-Mae Dove 2nd in the overall County Championship age group placings based on 5 categories Sutton SC also had a number of other swimmers finish in the top 10 in their age groups namely:

Jim Fergie Boys 16yrs and over finished 4th overall
Tom Polley Boys 12yrs finished 5th overall


Tom Trueman Boys 14yrs finished 6th overall


Talitha Oud Girls 13yrs finished 8th overall

The final day of the 2018 County Championships were dedicated to Team Relay events. This day is a real celebration of local swimming with many of the Sutton swimmers and parents dressing to impress this year with face and body paints, with fancy hats and bandannas together with noisy clappers and air horns all adding to the entertaining atmosphere. Sutton entered a record number of teams this year opting to enter a number of B teams in some of the events such is their strength in depth. These record entry levels also created record successes for the Sutton Club with no fewer than 2 x team 1st place Trophy winners, 9 x team 2nd place Silver medal winners and 6 x team 3rd place Bronze medal winners.

In the morning session which comprised of Mixed teams (2 Boys and 2 Girls) in both Freestyle and Medley relays over 4 x 50m races the Sutton teams reached 8 out of the 10 finals available and really impressively managed to get both the A and B team into the 14yrs Mixed Medley relay final.

There were no outright Mixed relay trophy winners but Sutton did pick up an impressive haul of medals along the way.

Mixed 16yrs Freestyle team (Connor Marsh, Nicholas Meldrum, Hollie-Mae Dove and Chloe Quinn) won Silver Medals in a time of 1.48.76

Mixed Open age Freestyle team (Kelsey Edwards, Chloe Peach,Chloe Quinn and Russ Golubs) won Silver Medals in a time of 1.46.00.

Mixed 14yrs Medley team (Matthew Woodhall Backstroke, Ellethea Hawley Breaststroke, Talitha Oud Butterfly and Francis Dermody Freestyle) won Silver Medals in a time of 2.06.59

Mixed Open age Medley team (Chloe Peach Backstroke, Russ Golubs Breaststroke, Jim Fergie Butterfly and Chloe Quinn Freestyle) won Silver Medals in a time of 1.57.98

In the afternoon and evening sessions the teams were made up of either 4 Girls or 4 Boys again competing in both Freestyle and Medley events with the majority of races swam over 4 x 50m heats to qualify for finals although the Open age group relays were heat declared results as they competed over 4 x 100m races.

Incredibly the Sutton teams reached all available 16 finals which is believed to be a first for the Club.

The stars of the day have to be Suttons 9/10yr old Boys teams who won the trophies for both the 4 x 50m Freestyle and 4 x 50m Medley relay events. The Medley team consisting of Jared Collins (Backstroke), Alfie Brown (Breaststroke), Ethan Potter (Butterfly) and Ellis Senior (Freestyle) were first to win Gold medals in a time of 3.00.97. Later that same evening session the Freestyle team consisting of Ethan Potter, Jared Collins, Ellis Senior and Finley Hollingworth won Gold medals in a time of 2.37.88.

The other Sutton teams that won medals in these relay final events were as follows:

Girls 14yrs/under Freestyle team (Alice Jones, Sarah Holmes, Talitha Oud and Emma Peel) won Silver medals in a time of 1.57.69

Girls 16yrs/under Freestyle team (Hollie-Mae Dove, Sophie Hutson, Ellie Bunker and Chloe Quinn) won Silver medals in a time of 1.55.11

Girls 16yrs/under Medley team (Sophie Hutson Backstroke, Hollie-Mae Dove Breaststroke, Ellie Bunker Butterfly and Chloe Quinn Freestyle) won Silver medals in a time of 2.09.35

Boys 12yrs/under Medley team (Liam Hill Backstroke, Evan Hawley Breaststroke, Tom Polley Butterfly and Harry Mckeaney Freestyle) won Bronze medals in a time of 2.31.70

Boys 14yrs/under Medley team (Matthew Woodhall Backstroke, Callum Peel Breaststroke, Adam Read Butterfly and Francis Dermody Freestyle) won Bronze medals in a time of 2.07.46

Girls 14yrs/under Medley team (Sarah Holmes Backstroke, Ellethea Hawley Breaststroke, Talitha Oud Butterfly and Alice Jones Freestyle) won Bronze medals in a time of 2.12.73

Boys 14yrs/under Freestyle team (Matthew Woodhall, Francis Dermody, Callum Peel and Bailey Slater) won Bronze medals in a time of 1.55.84

In the Open Age Group 4 x 100m heat declared winners events the Sutton teams won medals in all 4 available races.

Girls Open Medley team (Chloe Peach Backstroke, Sophie Bunker Breaststroke, Mia Fergie Butterfly and Chloe Quinn Freestyle) won Silver medals in a time of 4.37.40

Boys Open Freestyle team (Kelsey Edwards, Daniel Johnston, Jim Fergie and Russ Golubs) won Silver medals in a time of 3.42.37

Girls Open Freestyle team (Sophie Bunker, Chloe Peach, Chloe Quinn and Mia Fergie) won Bronze medals in a time of 4.08.52

Boys Open Medley team (Daniel Johnston Backstroke, Russ Golubs Breaststroke, Jim Fergie Butterfly and Kelsey Edwards Freestyle) won Bronze medals in a time of 4.13.42

Sutton's Head Coach Lee Bunker said at the conclusion of the 2018 County Championships, "I could not be happier with how these Championships have unfolded. As a club we have had record numbers of swimmers qualify and enter for the individual events, had record numbers of relay teams entered, had record numbers of individual event Junior/County champions, had record numbers of individual age group event Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, had record numbers of team relay podium 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes and have 2 individual age group overall County Champions. I owe a big thank you to all the swimmers for their efforts and a big thank you to all my team of volunteer teachers and coaches for preparing the swimmers so excellently."
